Dermal fillers are predominantly used for cosmetic treatments to plump up, and give instant pain relief to the bottom of the foot. They are gels of various thicknesses which are made from hyaluronic acid(HA) or poly-L-lactic-acid. HA develops by natural means within the body, existing in the skin, joints and eyes. It is hydrophilic, which means it draws in water molecules to ‘plump’ up, cushion, and keep structures resilient and flexible. It is an organic compound which over time normally deteriorates.
The dermal fillers are very carefully administered in small amounts directly under the skin, where the padding is needed to bring back volume and cushioning. The fillers will not have an effect on the shape of the foot, but merely add additionally required cushioning. Patients who have had the procedure frequently comment; “it seems like I am walking on pillows”.

What can dermal fillers be used for in a Podiatry setting?
Cushioning – dermal fillers can work by delivering extra padding into the balls of the feet and into the heels. Dermal fillers offer a ‘plumping’ effect in the area it is administered. Some of the filler also help the body to create more of its own collagen for longer term effect.
Treatment for corns – dermal fillers may be employed to relieve pain triggered by corns. Corns are concentrated regions of very hard skin which can be the result of severe pressure to the area. Injecting the filler below the uncomfortable corn gives added cushioning, minimizing the level of pressure the area is subjected to and helping prevent the corn from coming back.

Most women will sacrifice comfort for fashion, especially when it comes to wearing a gorgeous pair of high heels that ‘make’ an outfit. Unfortunately, over time, the fat pad at the ball of the foot thins and shifts so bones are not as well padded. Combine these changes with a heel height over two inches and it’s a recipe for foot pain.
“Now there is an alternative to forsaking your favorite pair of sky high Louboutins”.
“The same dermal filler that is used in the face to fill deep lines and make us look younger can also make our feet feel younger”
HOW LONG DO DERMAL FILLERS LAST?
Dermal fillers for foot cushioning can last around to 6 – 8 months. They will slowly break down to be naturally absorbed by the body over time. Some dermal fillers actually stimulate new collagen formation. Even as the filler breaks down, the thickness of tissue has increased. This means the effects can last a maximum of two years in the best case scenario.
